No último artigo da Folha comentei que o autor David Wallace Foster não escrevera sobre
comida e um amigo me chamou a atenção que no seu livro “Consider The Lobster: Essays
And Arguments” havia um ensaio que dava nome ao livro, justamente esse sobre o festival da
lagosta do Maine. (É uma reportagem escrita para a revista Gourmet em 2003)
Acontece que o autor tem seus textos de ficção e os de reportagem, e a lagosta foi uma
reportagem, feita, como sempre, com obsessivo cuidado mas também com um humor
certeiro. E ele não considerava a não ficção uma arte, mas uma escrita que o ajudava a
sobreviver , que o descansava da literatura, mas o impedia de escrever seus romances, ao
mesmo tempo. Ou um ou outro.
Começa por procurar no dicionário o que é uma lagosta, coisa que podemos fazer sozinhos.
As lagostas são gostosas, confirma ele, pelo menos é o que achamos agora, pois nos 1800 era
comida de pobre. Até em prisões americanas não era permitido dar lagosta aos prisioneiros
mais do que uma vez por semana pois era considerado cruel, como se estivessem alimentando
os criminosos com ratos.

E como em todas as feiras ou festivais vocês podem imaginar as filas, o calor, os cheiros,
as pessoas gritando e mastigando ao mesmo tempo, nada de muito elegante ou fino. Um detalhe
importante, avisa DWF é que a lagosta deve estar viva quando colocada na panela para
cozinhar. Um detalhe importante.
E no festival, então, são despejadas dos próprios barcos pescadores indo direto para as tendas-
restaurantes.
É aqui que aparece uma pequena preocupação no repórter que pergunta a todos os leitores
se não se importam de cozinhar uma lagosta viva só porque ela sabe bem ao nosso paladar.
E comenta que o motorista que o levou até lá, homem de uns setenta anos, diz que já foi a um
dos festivais e que eram filas enormes de gente para comer as lagostas, com rapazes e moças
passeando pelas filas e entregando panfletos que dizem que as lagostas morrem com dores
horríveis e que não se deve comê-las. Eram os ativistas da PETA. O motorista diz que apesar
de fazerem muito barulho, que o pessoal do Maine já não se importa com eles. Eles reclamam,
as pessoas do festival comem as lagostas e convivem bem, assim.
DWF que é um erudito acha que esse é um problema muito complexo e ainda não resolvido.
E que além de ser um problema complexo também nos incomoda muito. Ele próprio, o que
faz é não pensar no problema. E acha que os leitores da Gourmet vão odiar ler sobre dores ou
não dores das lagostas, pois eles querem mesmo é comê-las. E que as revistas de culinária não
estão aí para discutir a moralidade de cozinhar lagostas em água pelando…
Ele acha que como as lagostas são menores, causam mais impressão quando são mortas em
casa. Ali, no festival, com aquela multidão esfomeada ninguém presta muita atenção. Ele
imagina que num festival de churrasco seria problemático se os animais chegassem vivos
e fossem mortos ali, no lugar da feira, em frente a todos que esperam pelas costeletas e
cupins.
Depois de muitos estudos DWF chegou à conclusão que é possível, apesar de tantos
depoimentos contrários, que as lagostas sofram mais ainda do que imaginamos . Ou que as
lagostas sintam dor, neurologicamente, mas um jeito de sentir dor diferente dos mamíferos,
e que não se importam com a dor, pois há uma diferença entre (1) – dor como um fato
puramente neurológico e (2) sofrimento verdadeiro, que parece envolver um componente
emocional, uma consciência da dor, como sendo desagradável, como alguma coisa a se temer,
detestar, querer se livrar de.
Agora, ele DWF acha que pelo comportamento da lagosta ela não gosta de ficar na panela
e tenta sair, fazendo um barulhão, escalando as bordas da panela, o que demonstra uma
escolha, uma preferência. E há muitas outras provas de que as lagostas preferem umas
coisas a outras, gostam de viver no fundo da água, não gostam de sol, não gostam de ser
amontoadas em tanques, etc e tal.
E ele, o repórter começa a se chatear um pouco com essas reflexões. Será que no futuro
aquele festival será visto como um circo romano ou uma festa de tortura medieval? Será isso
um exagero? Será que verão uma feira tão prosaica de comemoração da comilança da lagosta
do mesmo modo que vemos agora as festas de Nero ou experiências de Mengele? Não, a
primeira vista essa reação é extrema e histérica. Na verdade ele acredita que os animais não
são tão importantes moralmente quanto os seres humanos.
E por que ele acha isso?
Porque tem um interesse óbvio nessa crença, pois gosta de comer os animais e quer continuar
comendo. Porque não conseguiu desenvolver uma teoria ética pessoal na qual a crença dele
seja defensável de verdade e não egoisticamente conveniente.
E ele não quer parecer um pastor raivoso. Ele simplesmente se sente confuso.
E pede aos leitores que respondam. Vocês pensam muito sobre o sofrimento dos animais que
comem? Como gastrônomos, que comem por prazer, qual a desculpa que dão para isso? A
explicação? Ou nós nos esquecemos de pensar nesse assunto por egoísmo?
Está realmente curioso. Ser gastrônomo não é ser muito sensível, atento, preocupado, com o
que se come? Não é isso que caracteriza um verdadeiro gourmet?
Apesar dele fazer as perguntas, muito sinceramente, acha que elas envolvem muitas
outras questões abstratas entre moralidade e ética e as perguntas levam direto a águas tão
traiçoeiras e perigosas que é melhor parar a discussão já. “Há limites para as perguntas que
mesmo as pessoas muito interessadas podem fazer umas às outras.”

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
