A mulher, muito bonita, se sentou à cabeceira da mesa, olhando se todos os pratos estavam nos seus lugares. Pediu ao casal de namorados que se acomodasse ao seu lado. Eles tinham aquele amor entre eles, ela só tinha aquela mesa comprida e arrumada, com os convidados prestes a jantar o seu famoso “boeuf en daube”.

Lá na cabeceira, o marido de cara enferrujada. O que seria desta vez, meu Deus? Pouco se lhe dava, de repente tudo pouco se lhe dava. Nas férias, eram sempre os mesmos convidados. Os amigos do marido, ou melhor, alunos dele com as cabeças cheias de filósofos e a pintora do quadro que nunca era terminado.

Aproveitou o serviço da sopa para aceitar nos ombros e na alma o cansaço de ter que manter a mesa alegre e unida. Sentiu mais uma vez a esterilidade dos homens, a dificuldade que tinham para juntar as pessoas, fazer com que uma refeição pulsasse com vida. Sempre era trabalho das mulheres.

O orientando caçula só faltava morrer de tédio. Tudo aquilo, o jantar, as pessoas sentadas falando de coisas que não o interessavam em nada! Adoraria estar no quarto, lendo. E o que adiantava aquela conversa tola, as relações humanas eram uma ficção, jamais se conheceriam profundamente.

A mulher pediu às crianças: “Acendam as velas.” Pronto, as velas acesas na mesa destacaram o arranjo de centro. Era uma simples tigela cheia de pêssegos de um vermelho-amarelo-rosa nunca visto. Não quisera mexer muito neles, só um toque e um galho de melindre bem tenro. Úmidos, como que houvessem absorvido um pouco daquele vapor de maresia que se estendia pela costa inteira.

A cozinheira entrou na sala trazendo um cheiro de azeitonas, azeite e molho. Levantou a tampa da panela de barro com a comida que levara três dias para fazer. E a mulher pensou que escolheria o melhor pedaço para o orientando, enquanto o sentia alheio a tudo. Olhou para as carnes, o louro, o vinho. Sentiu um calor no rosto, um desejo, haveria de fazer daquele ensopado uma celebração. O noivado do casal de sobrinhos. Haveria coisa mais forte para ser celebrada do que o amor de um homem por uma mulher?

“Está maravilhoso”, gemeu o orientando. “Com que diabos conseguem fazer um jantar como esse nos cafundós de uma praia deserta?”

Ela se sentiu acarinhada. “É uma receita da minha avó, receita francesa, é claro, só os franceses dão valor exato a uma carne bem feita, no ponto certo.”

“André”, disse ela ao filho, “levante o prato para eu não derrubar o caldo na toalha.” O “boeuf en daube” fora mesmo um sucesso. Todos repetiram, apaziguados.

O orientando mais velho perguntou a ela se queria um pêssego. “Ah, não, não quero” —na verdade, esperava que ninguém comesse um, para não destruir o momento captado sem querer. Toda vez que acertava um arranjo de mesa, baixava nela uma serenidade doce. Mas o jantar acabara. Espetou a ponta do guardanapo debaixo do prato. Ainda era preciso levar a vida em frente. Do seu lugar, observou os convidados se levantando, alguém apagando as velas. A configuração total das pessoas e do lugar mudara. O jantar já era o passado.
